Tucked away down a narrow London lane, Ruby Stella takes her name and inspiration from one of the neighbourhood’s historic literary lights: Charles Dickens.
During Dickens’ day, Clerkenwell was a hotbed of industry and creativity, with printers and bookbinders rubbing shoulders with watchmakers, jewellers and market traders.
In fact, many remain to this day in the streets surrounding Stella.
With this rich history in mind, we set to work creating a cosy, old-world bookish space.
From delicate quills to heavy presses, the bar celebrates every step of the publication process, right up to the gilt-edged, marbled end papers.
For texture, embossed leather and burnished brass meet traditional wool and tweed furnishings in dark blue and deep red hues.
The menu meanwhile is thoroughly modern, covering everything from the healthy breakfast and barista coffee, to signature cocktails and late-night snacks.
Upstairs, Stella’s rooms are all styled with Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels. There’s also a Marshall amp so you can plug in your playlist.
Farringdon station is a short walk away, from where you can be at St Pancras International station within five minutes and Heathrow airport in around 40 minutes, direct.

You’ll find Ruby Stella in Clerkenwell, one of London’s oldest neighbourhoods. With its recorded history stretching back over 900 years, be sure to keep an eye out for ancient churches, cobbled streets and, of course, a friendly tavern or two.
One of the oldest is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street, a 15-minute stroll or a short bus ride away. Supposedly a regular haunt of Charles Dickens, it’s a higgledy-piggledy drinking den that’s still a favourite with City workers.
To soak up some more history, hop on the tube and head to the Tower of London. As well as sneaking a peek at the crown jewels, you'll get a great view of the iconic Tower Bridge. For an uninterrupted riverside stroll, cross to the south bank and wind your way back west, passing markets, galleries and waterfront pubs.
If it's bright lights you're after, chart a course for Covent Garden and Soho. As well as top-notch theatre and shopping, you'll find London's bustling Chinatown. All are around a half hour walk from Ruby Stella, or a short trip by bus or tube.
When you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s no shortage of foodie spots near Ruby Stella. Exmouth Market is a five-minute walk away, where lunchtime stalls sell street food from around the world, and restaurants throw open their doors for dinner and drinks. Smithfield Market is also home to some delicious eateries, many dishing up produce from Smithfield itself, which is the country’s oldest and largest meat market.
Farringdon station is a short walk away, from where Heathrow airport is 40 minutes by tube, and St Pancras International station is a four-minute hop.
You can park comfortably at the "Hatton Garden" car park, just a four-minute walk from our front door.

Like you, we travel a lot. And wherever we go, we expect three things: a great night’s sleep, a powerful shower and top-notch connections – both to the city and the WiFi.
What we’re less keen on is paying for extras we never use. In dynamic cities bursting with Michelin stars and foodie pop-ups, room service sandwiches just don’t cut the mustard.
So we set out to create the best of both worlds – hotels with style and substance, but none of those expensive extras.
It’s what we call Lean Luxury.
To us, luxury means laid-back comfort in characterful surroundings, right in the heart of the city.
The lean part is all about being smart with space, streamlining things behind the scenes and doing away with the things you don’t need.
This innovative approach saves us and you money, without compromising on comfort.
