Oktoberfest Dos and Don’ts

Oktoberfest mag 15
Get ready to dive into the excitement of Oktoberfest in Munich. This legendary festival is a whirlwind of fun, culture, and celebration that draws people from all corners of the globe. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned pro, knowing the essential dos and don’ts will take your experience to the next level.

Do’s

1. Dress Appropriately: Embrace the local tradition and don traditional Bavarian attire. Lederhosen for men and Dirndls for women add to the festive atmosphere and are a mark of respect for local customs.

2. Be Friendly and Polite: Oktoberfest is a friendly event where mingling is encouraged. Greet your tablemates with a hearty "Prost" (Cheers) and clink glasses with the bottom of the mug to show respect.

3. Enjoy the Beer Responsibly: Oktoberfest is famous for its beer, served in one-litre steins called "Mass". It's stronger than the average beer, so pace yourself. Remember to eat plenty of food and drink water between steins to stay hydrated.

4. Explore Beyond Beer Tents: While beer might be the highlight, Oktoberfest also offers a variety of traditional Bavarian foods, amusement rides, and games. Take the time to explore the entire festival ground.

Don’ts

1. Bring Large Bags: Due to security reasons, large bags and backpacks are generally not allowed inside the festival grounds. Check the official Oktoberfest website for specific size restrictions and plan accordingly.

2. Stand on Benches: It's tempting to stand on benches to sing and dance, but always stay off the tables. Benches are somewhat tolerated, but tables are strictly off-limits and doing so can get you removed from the tent.

3. Forget to Tip: Service staff work incredibly hard during Oktoberfest, and it's customary to tip. A good rule of thumb is to tip around 10-15% of your bill, or at least €1-2 per beer.

4. Ignore Tent Reservations: Some tents at Oktoberfest can be reserved in advance, and these tables will be marked. Respect these reservations; if you're unsure, ask a server before sitting down to avoid any confusion.
