A Splash of Carnival on Our Walls

Two weeks ago, we celebrated the grand unveiling of "Jumbie Jubilation," an inspiring piece of public art created by the renowned artist Zak Ové. This vibrant new addition to Notting Hill’s streetscape was revealed with much fanfare, with Dr. Gus Casely-Hayford OBE, Director of V&A East, joining Ové for the special moment. It was an evening bursting with color, rhythm, and carnival vibes.

A Tribute to Carnival and Heritage

"Jumbie Jubilation" isn't just a pretty mural; it's a full-on celebration of Notting Hill’s rich heritage and a shoutout to 50 years of carnival culture. Inspired by the traditions, mythology, and sheer freedom of carnival and masquerade, Ové’s work is a joyful nod to his Trinidadian roots and the vibrant history of the Notting Hill Carnival.

The mural’s got eight jaw-dropping floor-to-ceiling glass mosaic panels that capture the essence of Notting Hill's carnival legacy. Each panel is a visual fiesta of colors and patterns, designed to bring the lively spirit of Trinidadian celebrations to life, blending beautifully with Ové’s unique abstract style.

People stand in line outside a modern building with colorful murals and large glass windows. The sign above the entrance reads Ruby. The street and a traffic light are visible in the foreground.

Art Meets History: The Story Behind the Mural

Zak Ové teamed up with celebrated mosaic artist Oliver Budd (yes, the genius behind Budd Mosaics) to bring this vision to life. Budd, who has been perfecting his craft for over forty years, was thrilled to dive into the world of glass mosaics for this project. And the project delivers. It’s a groundbreaking blend of carnival culture and an ancient art form, like you’ve never seen before.

Ové’s father, Horace Ové, was one of the founding figures of the Notting Hill Carnival. Through this mural, Zak Ové honors his father’s legacy and the incredible cultural richness that carnival brought to the UK. Ové explains. It’s a beautiful reminder of carnival’s impact and our ongoing celebration of diversity.
