Welcome to a festive journey back in time as we explore the origins of the world-famous Oktoberfest. Discover how this iconic festival began and why it continues to capture the hearts of millions every year.

The world’s largest folk festival

Oktoberfest, the world’s largest folk festival, started with a royal wedding. On October 12, 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig, who would later become King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the celebrations held on the fields in front of the city gates, named Theresienwiese (Theresa’s Meadow) in honour of the bride. The event concluded with horse races, and the decision to repeat the races in the subsequent years gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.

Over the years, Oktoberfest evolved from a simple horse race into a grand festival. By 1819, the citizens of Munich had taken over the management of the festival, extending it and adding more attractions and beer stands, which eventually grew into large beer halls we know today. The agricultural show, introduced in 1811, still takes place every four years on the southern part of the festival grounds.
