Ruby Bea, geïnspireerd door de kunstenaars, denkers en schrijvers van de Italiaanse renaissance, is gevestigd in een groot gebouw met uitzicht op een met bomen omringd plein. In feite ontleent Bea haar naam aan Dante Alighieri's geliefde, Beatrice. Binnen ontmoeten klassieke vormen frisse perspectieven, terwijl veel van de originele kenmerken van het gebouw liefdevol bewaard zijn gebleven.

Ruby Bea ligt aan de rand van het historische stadscentrum en dus op loopafstand van de musea, galerijen en prachtige architectuur van Florence. Om de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden te bekijken, loop je rechtdoor richting het zuidwesten van de stad, langs geplaveide straatjes geflankeerd door neoklassieke gebouwen en door de zon verlichte, gesloten Toscaanse huizen.

Cultuur & cafés

Het stadscentrum is bezaaid met prachtige kerken en mooie pleintjes. Kies je favoriete uitzicht en ga lekker zitten om de wereld aan je voorbij te zien gaan, met een caffè in de hand. Piazza Della Repubblica en zijn indrukwekkende plekken die een bezoekje waard zijn. Als je de Piazza del Duomo bezoekt, ga dan naar binnen in de Duomo di Firenze (de kathedraal van Florence) en beklim - als je geen hoogtevrees hebt - de koepel voor een close-up van de fresco's.

 

Voor meer hemelse kunst ga je rechtstreeks naar de oevers van de Arno en de Uffizi Gallery. Hier vind je Botticelli's ‘De geboorte van Venus’, samen met werken van da Vinci en Carravagio. Galleria dell'Accademia is een must-see voor kunstliefhebbers, met Michelangelo's ‘David’ als belangrijkste attractie.

Restaurants 

Als je genoeg cultuur hebt gesnoven, is het tijd om wat Toscaanse lekkernijen te proeven. Florence herbergt talloze heerlijke restaurants, dus struin wat rond naar een restaurant dat er goed uitziet. Lokale gerechten zijn onder andere pappardelle met wild zwijn of tagliatelle met truffels, gevolgd door knapperige amandelcantucci gedoopt in zoete dessertwijn.

Shopping

Eenmaal bijgetankt en klaar om te gaan, is het tijd om te gaan winkelen. Als thuisbasis van Gucci heeft Florence geen gebrek aan stijl. Voor alles van designermerken tot onafhankelijke boetieks, ga je naar Via Roma en Via dei Calzaiuoli. Als je op zoek bent naar sieraden, is de Ponte Vecchio bekleed met luxe winkels, en je kunt onderweg stoppen voor een klassieke Florentijnse foto.

Om je verblijf in stijl af te sluiten, steek je de brug over naar Oltrarno en loop je bergopwaarts naar Piazzale Michelangelo, voor een prachtig uitzicht op de stad bij zonsondergang.
