Perched on the edge of the historic city centre, Ruby Bea is within strolling distance of Florence’s museums, galleries and beautiful architecture. To hit the main sights, follow your nose south west to the city, down cobbled streets flanked by Neoclassical buildings and sunbaked, shuttered Tuscan homes.
Culture & cafés
The city centre is dotted with stunning churches and pretty piazzas. Pick your favourite view, then settle in to watch the world go by, caffè in hand. Piazza Della Repubblica and Piazza del Duomo are impressive spots that deserve a stop. If you’re visiting the latter, pop inside the Duomo di Firenze (Florence cathedral) and – if you’ve a head for heights – climb to the dome for a close up of the frescoes. For more heavenly art, make a beeline for the banks of the Arno and the Uffizi Gallery. Here, you’ll find Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, along with works by da Vinci and Carravagio. Galleria dell’Accademia is another must for art-lovers, with Michelangelo’s David the main attraction.
Restaurants
When you’ve had your fill of culture, it’s time to try some Tuscan treats. Florence is home to myriad delicious restaurants, so just follow your nose to one that looks good. Local dishes include wild boar pappardelle or tagliatelle with truffles, followed by crunchy almond cantucci dunked in sweet dessert wine. Refuelled and raring to go, it’s time to hit the shops.
Shopping
As the home of Gucci, Florence isn’t short on style. For everything from designer names to independent boutiques, head to Via Roma and Via dei Calzaiuoli. If it’s jewellery you’re after, Ponte Vecchio is lined with luxury stores, and you can stop off for a classic Florentine photo while you’re there.
Views
To end your stay in style, cross the bridge to Oltrarno and strike out uphill to Piazzale Michelangelo for beautiful sunset views over the city.
